* What Is "Six Sigma" Anyway?
Six Sigma is a statistical term that literally means ~3.4 defects per 1 million - almost performance perfection!
Most work tasks don't require this degree of excellence but by analyzing your data we can see where performance is lacking so it can be improved to acceptable levels. Hundreds of large and small companies across the world have successfully deployed Six Sigma for manufacturing and adapted Six Sigma principles for the knowledge industry: business, engineering, financial services and marketing.
The PDF file, below, gives additional insight about Six Sigma.
What Is "Six Sigma"?
The benefits of Six Sigma aren't limited to the big boys with deep pockets any more. Small businesses can easily embrace these practical principles quickly with support from experienced, customer-oriented companies, like MoreTime Consulting.
Six Sigma Process Approach Quotes:
About Working Less
"In the first round of work simplification . . . you can reasonably expect a 30 to 50 percent reduction...To implement the actual simplification, you must question why each step is performed. Typically, you will find that many steps exist in your work flow for no good reason. Often they are there by tradition or because formal procedure ordains it, and nothing practical ordains it."
- Andrew S. Grove - CEO Intel Corp
About Problem Solving
"The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them."
- Albert Einstein, (attributed) - US (German-born) physicist (1879 - 1955)
About Six Sigma
"The widespread acceptance of Six Sigma initiatives has created an environment where quality professionals (even at non-Six Sigma companies) have to apply an enormous body of knowledge through a rigorous, project-based methodology. "
- ASQ Advertising
"The Six Sigma Quality initiative has lowered GE's costs by dramatically reducing rework, simplifying processes and reducing direct material costs."
- Jack Welch, former President and CEO of General Electric, in 2000
"Today's competitive environment leaves no room for error. We must delight our customers and relentlessly look for new ways to exceed their expectations. That is why Six Sigma Quality has become part of our culture."
- General Electric home web page, 2003
"Motorola, the creators of Six Sigma, have implemented it throughout their organization for over 15 years. As a result, they have documented over $16 billion in savings. Robert Galvin, former CEO of Motorola, says “If you can control the variation, you can achieve remarkable results – it’s just common sense.”
